A Charles II tankard,
of slightly tapering cylindrical form on a reeded rim foot, embossed around the lower body with a band of debased acanthus leaves and engraved with a coat of arms* within plume mantling, the flattened domed cover with a reeded brim, chased on top with an acanthus leaf spreading from the large scroll handle dolphin thumbpiece, the large scroll handle pricked "E" over "V.M" between stylised fern leaves above the scratched initials "E,H" and pierced at the junction of the body with a vertical row of club and lozenge shaped slits, later initialled underneath the base "W de E 1866", makers mark T.C. a fish above, 1677 - 27.75cm high, 28oz. * The arms are that of Hobbs, Tooting-Bec, Surrey. Sold with a contemporary newspaper cutting and Christie's catalogue relating to the sale of this tankard in 1933.
