applied with ormolu mounts, the superstructure with pierced gallery and concave frieze above a pair of panelled cupboard doors enclosing a fitted rosewood interior and with two drawers and serpentine writing surface below, the shaped frieze drawer enclosing a green velvet lined writing slide, on cabriole legs terminating in sabot feet, the lock stamped Tahan a Paris, losses -- 30in. (76cm.) wide

Lot Essay

Jean-Pierre-Alexandre Tahan (1813-1892) working at successive addresses in Paris, he became one of the most celebrated cabinetmakers in the city. He was highly regarded by Napoleon III and became the pre-eminient specialist for small precious items of furniture.
