Lot Essay

Joseph Gurney (1744-1815) was the eldest surviving son of Thomas Gurney (lot 69). He succeeded his father as shorthand-writer at the Old Bailey, in the Courts of Law and in the House of Commons. In 1766 he married Rebecca Brodie, who founded a girl's charity school and a maternity society for young mothers. Both Gurney and his wife continued the family tradition as members of the Maze Pond Church.
