Lot Essay

In 1690, the London born artist, Mathias Read, settled in Whitehaven, Cumbria, where he was to become one of the first native painters of English landscapes. Read arrived in Whitehaven with his master, Jan Wyck, after portraying events at the Battle of the Boyne. Under the patronage of the Lowther family he flourished, painting townscapes and country seats of Cumbria.
