A Figure on a windswept Beach, Eastbourne
inscribed and dated '14/Eastbourne Sep. 1853/Day after tomorrow we leave/Eastbourne - attempt to/represent the stormy waves rolling into the Wich from SW wind very high weather unsettled/Waves sweeping along the beach from W to E with a wiping sound/Shingle has travelled much in the storm and beach much altered/Sea broke into kitchens of ten houses the other night. It tore up/some of the .... on parade. In a storm it burst with ...../grandeur on sea ...., leaping with the air as high as the roofs/of the houses. If the wall gave way the houses would be washed down in half an hour as they are founded on shingle' (on the reverse)
