Casali was in England from 1741-1766 and this is the second of two oil sketches for a larger picture he executed for Fonthill which was exhibited at the Free Society in 1761.
King Edward (c.963-978) was killed at Cospes-gate, now Corfe Castle, probably at the instigation of his step-mother. He was initially buried in unconsecrated ground but his body was later moved to Shaftesbury in 980 where miracles began to occur near his tomb. He was officially proclaimed as a martyr by 1001 A.D.
