Illuminated manuscript on paper, comprising sura lxxiv (al-muddaththir), beginning to part of v.21, powerful brown muhaqqaq, large gold continuous knot roundels marking the verse endings, the bismillah entirely in gold, magnificent large illuminated sura heading above illuminated in five panels within a meandering motif border, various large marginal medallions marking divisions of text, the margins also with three different commentaries written in panels in blue, red-brown and black, each with a short gold title, very slight water staining and spotting

Lot Essay

This folio comes from the second volume of a two part Qur'an, of which the first volume is now in the National Museum of Damascus. It bears a waqf certificate of the Emir Sayf al-Din Manjak, briefly a governor of Damascus in 1350 for Sultan Hasan.
