Lot Essay

The Talpurs ruled Hyderabad in Sind province from 1783 to 1843, until its annexation by the East India Company. The dynasty had contacts with Qajar Persia, and used Persian craftsmen for the weapons and illuminated Qur'ans which they favoured.
Nur Muhammad (d.1841) was the nephew of Mir Fath 'Ali, the first Talpur ruler. A fine enamelled dagger and sheath made for Mir Fath 'Ali was sold in these rooms, 24 November 1987, lot 247.
