Lot Essay

The commissioning inscription panel translates: "Made for the parties (bazm) of His Highness Mawlawi 'Abd al-Latif Khan Bahadur in 1292/1875-76".

The smaller one on the opposite side describes this bowl as "the attempt of Aqa Muhammad Husayn Shirazi".

The larger cartouches in the upper register contain a Persian poem in three couplets in praise of 'Abd al-Latif. The small cartouches with which these alternate contain eight of the beatific names of God.

This bowl was made in the same year, 1875-75, as a bowl presented by the same individual, Aqa Muhammad al-Husayn al-Shirazi, to the Maharaja of Gwalior in this sale (lot 207). It is very likely that the individual mentioned here, 'Abd al-Latif Bahadur Khan, was a dignitary at the court of Gwalior.
