A 4-inch (10.2cm.) diameter miniature terrestrila globe made up of twelve chromolithographed paper gores and two polar calottes, the equator and prime meridian graduated in degrees, the latter running through Iceland, the ecliptic ungraduated, the continents with nation states delicately outlined in green, yellow, orange and pink and showing rivers and mountain ranges, some cities and towns, outh America with Bolivia shown, Alaska shown as belonging to Russia, very little Antarctic coastline shown ( some surface discolouration and bubbling to varnish), mounted on wire support to turned ebonised fruitwood pillar and plinth base -- 8in. (20.3cm.) high

Lot Essay

The labelling of Africa dates the manufacture of this globe between 1877 and 1884: Stanley's tracing of the river Congo from Central Africa to the Atlantic coast, accomplished in August 1877, is shown, whilst Togo and Cameroon are shown as independent prior to their annexation by Germany in July 1884.
