A 3-inch (8.2cm.) diameter miniature terrestrial globe made up of twelve coloured engraved gores, the equator and meridian graduated in degrees, the latter unlabelled, the ecliptic graduated in days but unlabelled, the oceans coloured dark green and showing ocean currents, the continents coloured yellow and showing rivers, mountain ranges, deserts, towns and cities, Alaska shown as American, the course of the Congo river not shown (surface abrasions and varnish loss, some loss of detail) with stamped brass finial U. D. B. [..] * PARIS *, raised on moulded resin plinth base with foliate decoration -- 6in. (15.7cm.) high

Lot Essay

The date of manufacture of this globe can be figured between the sale of Alaska to America in 1867, and 1877, when Stanley plotted the course of the River Congo from the interior of Africa to the Atlantic Ocean.
