THE NEW TWELVE INCH BRITISH Terrestrial Globe REPRESENTING THE ACCURATE POSITIONS OF THE PRINCIPAL KNOWN PLACES OF THE EARTH FROM THE DISCOVERIES OF CAPTAIN COOK AND SUBSEQUENT CIRCUMNAVIGATIONS TO THE PRESENT PERIOD - 1839 COX, LONDON
A 12-inch (30.5cm.) diameter terrestrial table globe made up of twelve hand-coloured engraved gores and tw polar calottes, the equator graduated in degrees twice and twice 12 hours in two directions, the ecliptic graduated in days and showing symbols for the houses of the Zodiac, the oceans with an analemma, ocean currents, trade winds and the tracks of numerous explorers including Anson, Cook and the Resolution, with numerous notes and dates such as S.S. Westerly Monsoon in June July & August from Lat. 10.N. to the equator off West Africa, Jardines according to Cap. Marshall in 1788 and Lots Wife probably the same as Rica d'Oro South-East of Japan, Bouvets I. seen by the Swan & otter Octr. 1808 in southern Atlantic, the continents outlined in green with various nation states shaded grren and yellow and showing a large amount of physical and political information such as mountains, rivers, oases, towns and cities (surface abrasions and discolouration, crazing and some loss to varnish, scratches, old repaired cracks, some paper loss) with engraved brass meridian circle divided in four quadrants, the hand-coloured engraved paper horizon graduated in degrees in two directions, days of the month with names and days of the houses of the Zodiac with names, symbols and pictures, and compass directions (abrasions, discolouration, redrawing) on four baluster turned legs with turned cross-stretchers -- 18in. (45.8cm.) high
