Lot Essay

This Canterbury corresponds to a design by John C Loudon published in 1833 in The Encyclopedia of Cottage, Farm and Villa Architecture and Furniture. See illustration of the design to right.

A similar canterbury by Treherne is illustrated in The Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, p.455, fig 918a, which was included in a sale of furniture at Sotheby's London 13 February 1989, lot 276. Possibly the Mr Treherne noted without an initial in the Furniture History Society Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840.
