The confident use of a powerful red ground indicates that this magnificent large dish was made around 1580-85, at a similar period to a dish in the Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon, which has a central red field of reserved arabesques, (Atasoy, N. and Raby, J.: Iznik, the Pottery of Ottoman Turkey, London, 1989, pl.740) and a mug in the Victoria and Albert Museum (Atasoy, N. and Raby, J.: op.cit., pl.750).
