Lot Essay
Deccani silk rugs rarely come to the market; this fragment is from a particularly fine example, other fragments of which are known in various collections and one of which was offered in these Rooms 12 October 1989, lot 49. The rich burgundy field is typical of the rugs from this region of India during the 18th century. The close links with the Mughal Empire and the trade links with Persia produced fine quality rugs and carpets with a combination of well drawn floral motifs in both the field and border. Another similar example of a complete Deccani carpet from this period was offered in these Rooms 24 April, 1997, lot 428.
