Lot Essay

Metal threads were used by several shawl manufacturers in this period, including Josef Berger, Nourtier and Duch. Nourtier exhibited examples in 1845, Duch in 1849 and 1851. Another square Chinoiserie shawl from circa 1851 is worked against a black ground. See "Cachemires Parisiens 1810-1880", Monique Lvi-Strauss, 1998, Paris, p. 19.
