Provenance
Castletown Co. Kildare

It has always been stated by Mr Sainsbury that these shelves were acquired from Castletown prior to the Jackson-Stops sale in 1966 and a set of shelves matching this description is listed in an inventory of the mansion taken in 1893. The inventory of the contents of the Mansion House, Castletown was taken by James Adam Appraisers for Mr Nuttings Tenancy in October 1893 and in Lady Kildare's room are a set of 'Inlaid mahogany hanging bookshelves with two lockers and two drawers broken in back of locker, moulding chipped generally and slightly burnt in one place'.

A number of pieces are known to have been supplied by Pierre Langlois to Castletown and referred to in correspondence in 1762 and 1763: Pierre Langlois, Ebeniste Part I, Peter Thornton and W. Rieder, The Connoisseur, December 1971, p.285. These hanging shelves with their marquetry of foliate sprays with flower stems are very much in the manner of pieces by Langlois, known to have come from the house and can, therefore, also be attributed to him.
