Lot Essay

The Aertex Company was set up in 1888 by Lewis Haslam, formerly an M.P. for Newport, to promote the fabric which had been invented by him and two medical colleagues so fresh air could respirate the skin. Men's clothing was made in 1889 followed by women's in 1891. See "Fashion in Underwear", Elizabeth Ewing, 1971, pps. 73-5.
