Each shield-form padded back carved with a ribbon-tie, the downswept padded arms and padded seat, on turned tapering fluted legs headed by paterae, upholstered in floral damask, lacking rosettes on arms of one, redecorated (2)

Lot Essay

These chairs are based on a pattern published in the Estimate Sketch Books of the London and Lancaster firm of Gillow (reproduced in L.Boynton, ed., Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, 1995, p.266). A set of six chairs of virtually the same design was sold Sotheby's London, 17 June 1983, lot 74.
