END OF MORNING SESSION AFTERNOON SESSION AT 2:00 P.M. (Lots 305-548) Property from the Collection of THE LATE LORE AND RUDOLPH HEINEMANN (Lots 305-359) Dr. Rudolf Heinemann (1901-1975) was one of the most distinguished art dealers of his generation. Born in Munich, Dr. Heinemann began his career in the 1930s cataloguing Baron Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza's rapidly growing collection at the Villa Favorita in Lugano. He later set up as an independent dealer in New York, working closely with a distinguished clientèle including American museums such as the Frick Collection in New York. Dr. Heinemann and his wife Lore, whom he married in 1947, shared a passion both for travel and the fine and decorative arts. Together they collected fine paintings, drawings, furniture and objects for their Fifth Avenue apartment in New York, their country estate in Mt. Kisco and their villa near Lugano in Switerland. Lore Heinemann survived her husband by more than twenty years and elegantly and hospitably presided over their collection. Following her death in September last year, several museums including the Morgan Library, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, received benefactions of remarkable generosity. Christie's was privileged to offer selections from the collection. Among the highlights were Corot's La jeune Grècque and Gustave Courbet's Le sculpteur, which sold in our May sale of Nineteenth Century paintings in New York, followed by important Old Master paintings and drawings sold in London in July. The Heinemanns chose to live with traditional Georgian furnishings to complement their bbeguiling collection of Old Master paintings and drawings which filled the walls of their elegant New York apartment. These objects, purchased primarily from major London firms such as Mallett & Son in the early 1950s, were chosen with the same discerning taste that marked their art collection. Christie's is honored to offer the furniture from the Heinemann's New York apartment in the following lots. A selection of European Works of Art will be offered in a sale in New York in Janaury 1998.
