Lot Essay

This concave chest with shallow drawer fitted with a writing surface is based on a design for a 'Dressing Chest' published by Thomas Sheraton in his The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book of 1793, pl.15. Sheraton states that 'the height of these chests are always governed by the slider, which runs thirty-two or thirty-three inches from the floor. The scale shews their length, and their breadth is twenty-two or twenty-three inches.'
