Lot Essay

These distinctive console tables, with naturalistically carved supports in the form of tree trunks and rockwork, relate to a group of similar Roman tables which derive ultimately from the designs of the celebrated Baroque architect Gianlorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) and his circle including Giovanni Paolo Schor (1615-1674).Two designs for related consoles, attributed to Bernini and Schor, are in the National Museum, Stockholm (illustrated in A. Gonzales-Palacios, Il Tempio del Gusto, Roma e il Regno delle Due Sicilie, Milan, 1984, vol. II, figs. 181-2) while a table of this design forming the base of Bernini's sculpture of St. Laurence in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence, is illustrated ibid., fig. 187. A pair of related Roman corner consoles with tree-form supports, supplied to Cardinal Flavio II Chigi circa 1769, was sold in these rooms 26 October 1994, lot 110.
