拍品专文

This is a preparatory drawing for a painting of Rousseau's grandmother (see Thodore Rousseau, exh. cat. Paris, Muse du Louvre, 1967, no. 13). Rousseau spent two months with his paternal grandmother in Salins after a trip to the Jura in 1834, and this work was most likely executed during this visit.

There is an inscription on an old backing on the reverse which may be transcribed: Offert mon bien excellent ami/Monsieur Wyatt Eaton/Paris. Octobre 89/Gustave Robert. Wyatt Eaton (1849-1896) was an American painter studying in Paris under Jean Lon Grme.
