Tapir heads are not uncommon as ornaments at the base of the swing handles on early bronze vessels. Compare a Middle Western Zhou dynasty yu also with tapir heads included in an exhibition at the National Palace Museum and published in Shang Zhou Qingtong Jiuqi Tezhan Tulu (Catalogue of the Special Exhibition of Shang and Chou Dynasty Bronze Wine Vessels), Taipei, 1989, p. 153, pl. 46. See another dated to the Early Zhou in the exhibition, Mostra d'Arte Chinese (Exhibition of Chinese Art), Venice, 1954, Catalogue, p. 32, no. 54 and a third published by W. Watson, Ancient Chinese Bronzes, London, 1962, no. 24a.
