AN EARLY CONFEDERATE STARS AND BARS SILK FLAG, FRAMED
The early configuration of this flag, of two red stripes and one white, with a blue field (sewn of two parts) containing a pattern of eleven five-pointed stars in the form a circle of ten surrounding one a larger star at center. This pattern was changed early in the war to the crossed stars and bars pattern. Within a fancy gilt frame and held on a red felt backing. 45 x 70 inches, the frame 56 x 80 inches. Together with a group of letters discussing the provenance of this flag. Obtained in 1969 br a Mr. Brian J. Maxson from the Schwartz family of Cabin Creek, West Virginia. The flag had been given to the Schwartz family by a member of the Nugen family who had the flag since the war. Numerous letters from institutions concerning the flag accompany this lot.
