AN INSCRIBED NON-REGULATION US OFFICERS SWORD

Klingenthal blade. Three brass mounts present, three-quarters of leather scabbard lacking. Throat inscribed Lieut./V. M. Hodgson/WHITE PLAINS/N.Y./1st. Regt. L.I. Vols. Twisted brass wire bound ray-skin bound grip, brass hilt with floral motifs inscribed V.M. HODGSON.
Together with a facsimile copy of the obituary of Valentine Mott Hogdson (1836-1921), which notes that the resident of White Plains, New York died at the age of 85 years at his home of 14 Greenridge Avenue, White Plains. He was married in 1857 to Eliza J. Requa of Tarrytown. He was commissioned a Lieutenant in the 1st Long Island Volunteers (later the 67th New York) and served in the Peninsula Campaign in Virginia. At Malvern Hill (July 1st, 1862) he was given a battlefield commission to Captain for gallant and meritorious service by General Abercrombie.
