SHERMAN ON THE MARCH TO CHATTANOOGA
Hurrying to unite with Grant and aid the besieged Rosecrans, Sherman gives hurried field orders to Union troops following in his wake: "Elk River 4 miles East of Rogersville is too deep, wide & rapid to pass with our trains and we are forced round to the North. Follow our track from Rogersville...to this Camp on Andersons Creek. Good water but no forage. 3 or 4 miles further the road forks...the right is the one you take and goes via Davids on Sugar Creek. Prospect & Elkton & so on to Fayettsville...I found plenty of forage up to Rogersville but none thereabouts or here. Better let your wagons put in a supply before reaching Rogersville. [Charles] Ewings Division will be near Prospect tomorrow night. I would like your advance to be well up to Sugar Creek."
Sherman's Army of the Tennessee had been supplied by railroads which he repaired as he went. This caused considerable delays, and he was ordered by Grant to desist and proceed directly to Chattanooga. He arrived at Bridgeport on 15 November, and on the same day was briefed by Grant on his part in the coming battle.
