1962 CASSIUS CLAY/LOUISVILLE SPONSORING GROUP CONTRACT
A significant Boxer-Manager contract between Cassius Clay and William Faversham, Jr. Faversham, who was based in Louisville, headed a group known collectively as The Louisville Sponsoring Group. This group of eleven local businessmen managed Clay's career through the early years and guided him to his first Heavyweight Championship over Sonny Liston in 1964. Executed on April 23, 1962, the contract extended to Faversham a three-year period of management in compliance with the rules of the California State Athletic Commission. The contract was necessary because Clay's agreement with the Louisville Group, dated October 26, 1960, was executed in the state of Kentucky when Clay was eighteen years old. One of the provisions called for Clay to receive fifty percent of all sums of money and for the group to pay for all expenses. On April 23, 1962, Clay fought for the first time in California against George Logan. State law required a managerial contract for fighters and also stipulated that a fighter had to receive at least 66 2/3 percent of all money earned. The new terms were mandatory for Clay to fight Logan as well as Moore and Lavorante. This is the last contract between the two parties. The one-page document is signed boldly in ink on the front by Cassius Clay, Jr. and William Faversham, Jr. This is the only known existing contract between Cassius Clay and his original management group. Together with a photograph of Clay signing his original document in 1960 . Excellent condition.
