The plain fullered blade marked Collins & Co/Hartford/Conn./1862 at ricasso, with original polish (bearing some minor staining). Set with an elaborate gilt-brass hilt pierced and chased in relief with scrolls and floral motifs, bearing the portrait likeness of Medusa with intertwined snakes about her neck, the pommel cap a vacant convex oval with laurel leaf surround, the quillion with snarling lion's head terminal. Twisted brass wire (minor repairs) wrapped shagreen bound grip. Three mounts with engraved and stippled decoration, set in turn with applied gilt high relief figure of standing officer, panoply of Roman arms, and oak leafs on the swords original scabbard, the whole of gilt brass.
