Oblong folio, (lacking scarce 8vo text volume), original blind-panelled brown morocco, gilt, ceramic corner bosses, a.e.g., boards detached and slightly scuffed, spine worn; plates spotted in margins, some more heavily spotted in the image, half the plates loose in binding, 2 with marginal repair, one with creases and short tears to outer margin, bookplate removed from front pastedown, the prints generally very good.
BARNARD'S RARE PHOTOGRAPHIC RECORD OF SHERMAN'S CAMPAIGNS
In 1863 Barnard was appointed Official Photographer of the Military Division of the Mississippi and accompanied Sherman's troops on their dramatic and incendiary campaigns from Tennessee into Georgia, the fall of Atlanta, the March to the Sea and final thrust into the Carolinas. Barnard concentrated on the evocative landscapes and city scenes of the desolation in the wake of battle. These are portrayed in telling detail and physicality; the tonalities of the prints are rich and full of contrast. Barnard's exacting eye produced a costly record, and the book was issued at a price of $100, at a time when most Americans were prepared to forget the war and forego the expense.
