A JAPANESE EXPORT MOTHER-OF-PEARL-INLAID BLACK LACQUER SMALL CHEST
edo/meiji period (19th century)
Of rectangular form, with two short drawers over a single long drawer, the case inlaid with a design of flowering chrysanthemum, prunus and peony amidst birds and nashiji rockery, the drawers fitted with curved metal handles, atop a rectangular base with curved lip

Lot Essay

This piece probably belongs to a group of objects called 'Nagasaki' wares. During the Edo period, when Japan was closed to foreigners except for a select number of trading ports similarly decorated objects were exported to Europe through Nagasaki.
