For a recent discussion of compound eye beads see p. 198 in Stern and Schlick-Nolte, Early Glass of the Ancient World, 1600 B.C.-A.D. 50, Ernesto Wolf Collectoin, where it is suggested that this form of bead might be an Italian variant.
