A ROMAN MOSAIC GLASS INLAY
egypt, circa 1st century b.c-1st century a.d.
Composed of two half sections joined to form a full mask of the goddess Isis on a blue ground, with opaque off-white for the face outlined in black, details of the eyes, nose and mouth in black, with white for the eyes and red for the lips, the hair with tiny black straight and coiled details embedded in opaque red, the face framed by two corkscrew curls and a fringe across the forehead, wearing a white fillet with descending elements terminating in small beads, surmounted by a plumed crown with a red solar disk enclosed in black, the black plume with yellow details and border, the crown framed by two sheaths of wheat of light green grains on dark green with yellow on black for the "silk"
