AN ATTIC BLACK-FIGURE NECK AMPHORA

One side with Herakles at left, wearing the Nemean lion-skin, brandishing his club in his raised right hand to rescue Deianeira from the centaur Nessos, the centaur looking over his shoulder, his left arm raised, his right arm around Deianeira who sits upon his back, with a draped youth at right looking on; the other side with Achilles and Memnon in combat, with their mothers Thetis and Eos watching from the wings, the warriors, each in a broad stance, wearing a crested helmet, with a spear in the raised right hand, a shield in the left, a cock in added white as a shield device; with a double palmette frieze on the neck, a band of tongue below, a band of meander and a band of lotus bud chain below the scenes, rays above the foot, a quatrefoil of palmettes with a lotus blossom below each triple-reeded handle, details in added red and white
