THE "LANSDOWNE" TRAJAN
roman, circa 98-117 a.d
The marble portrait head of Trajan displaying the emperor's characteristic hairstyle, with the hair combed forward, with long locks curling to the left over the forehead, restorations to the large nose, ears and shallow chin, the head joined in the 18th Century to a full-length male nude in the heroic style and of the period, the body posed in a Polykleitan stance, the weight upon the left leg, the right leg relaxed, the right arm bent at the elbow, now holding a cross in the hand, his cloak thrown over the left shoulder, the end twisted over the partially extended left fore-arm, the ends of the cloak resting on a tree trunk support, restorations to the right arm, left fore-arm, portions of the cloak, the lower part of the right leg, the left foot, the pedestal and portions of the tree trunk, on a modern square plinth base
