This tapestry table-carpet was probably woven as part of a suite comprising matching valances and bed curtains as was fashionable in wealthy Dutch households during the 17th century. For numerous examples of related pieces, see geweven boeket (exhibition catalogue) Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, 20 Nov. 1971- 30 Jan. 1972, which includes an illustration of a painting by Gonzales Coques circa 1630, depicing a typical Dutch bourgeois interior unified by a suite of tapestries, including a table-cover, a chimney-piece border, bed hangings, and pillow cushion.
