Based on Titian's highly influential painting of 1526-30 formerly in the Church of S.S. Giovanni e Paolo, Venice, and destroyed by fire on August 16, 1867 (H. Wethey, The Paintings of Titian, I, The Religious Paintings, 1969, pp. 153-5, no. 133).

Sold with a photocopy of a certificate by Professor H.P. von Grundherr, dated March 1, 1955, as a bozzetto by Titian
