Lot Essay

A smaller variant, on panel and with three different figures similarly grouped at lower left, is in the ML.M. Collection, Milan (A. Morassi, Guardi, 1973, I, p. 447, no. 735; II, fig. 679, as a mature work). A preparatory drawing for the composition is in the Janos Scholz Collection, Pierpont Morgan Library, New York (A. Morassi, Guardi. I disegni, 1975, p. 167, no. 502, fig. 500). The present painting corresponds more closely with the drawing than does the version in Milan in showing a fourth figure by the wall on the right and more of the shrine. A variant in a horizontal format is in the Museo Cagnola at Varese (E. Malagutti, Precisazioni su otto dipinti di Francesco Guardi della raccolta Cagnola di Varese, Arte Veneta, XXVI, 1972, p. 226, fig. 309; Morassi, op. cit., 1973, I, p. 447, no. 736)
