A smaller variant, on panel and with three different figures similarly grouped at lower left, is in the ML.M. Collection, Milan (A. Morassi, Guardi, 1973, I, p. 447, no. 735; II, fig. 679, as a mature work). A preparatory drawing for the composition is in the Janos Scholz Collection, Pierpont Morgan Library, New York (A. Morassi, Guardi. I disegni, 1975, p. 167, no. 502, fig. 500). The present painting corresponds more closely with the drawing than does the version in Milan in showing a fourth figure by the wall on the right and more of the shrine. A variant in a horizontal format is in the Museo Cagnola at Varese (E.
