Lot Essay

The Punta di Dogana, viewed from a variety of angles, was one of Guardi's favorite subjects (see Morassi, op. cit., I, pp. 403-6, nos. 497-513; II, figs. 494-503). The positions of the boats in the present painting are loosely related to those in Morassi no. 499, fig. 495 (sold at Christie's, London, April 21, 1989, lot 95)
