Lot Essay

A signed variant, also on panel and of similar size, was formerly with David Koetser, Zürich (A. Morassi, Guardi, 1973, I, p. 444, no. 715; II, fig. 668, where dated c. 1780-90); this shows different figures, a Corinthian rather than a Doric colonnade and a niche in place of the plaque between the arches of the gateway. Preparatory drawings for the composition are in a Milan private collection (A. Morassi, Guardi. I disegni, 1975, p.165, no. 490, fig. 486) and in the Museo Civico Correr, Venice (ibid., p. 165, no. 488, fig. 489).

A version by an imitator was sold at Christie's, London, June 16, 1967, lot 122
