Lot Essay

The present composition is an early copy of nearly identical size to Breughel's painting in the Städelsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt (Inv. no. 1220); see K. Ertz, Jan Breughel der Ältere, 1979, p. 579, no. 129, illus. p. 232, fig. 296, which, together with the previous lot, was probably based on a lost original in the collection of the Duc de Praslin
