Bartolomeo Ligozzi, son of Francesco Ligozzi, was the grandson of the famous Florentine painter Jacopo Ligozzi and a specialist in still life painting. In 1660 and 1666 Cardinal Carlo commissioned him to produce several flower paintings. He also worked for the Cavalier Luigi Nartoloni, who owned two of his still lifes, exhibited at a fine art show in the Chapel of San Luca alla SS. Annunziata in 1767. The present painting can be compared to several works including those in the Maiorano collection, Naples and to a pair of still lifes reproduced by Marinella Mosco and Minella Rizzotto in the Palazzo Pitti exhibition catalogue, Floralia, florilegio dalle collezioni fiorentine del Sei-Settocento, 1988, p. 80, nos. 40a and b
