Lot Essay

Earl Carroll's series of lavish burlesque 'Vanities', of which Murder at the Vanities was the last, were similar in format, if rather more risqu in nature, to the Ziegfeld 'Follies'. Ralph Stein (1909-1996) was, it seems, permitted by Carroll to go backstage and even climb into the rafters of the theatre in order to obtain this vivid record of the performers, including one of the show's leading actress, Gay Orlova.
The images are unique.
