At the turn of the century, the Broca Hospital in Paris was a thriving center for the treatment of skin diseases. The album, belonging to one of the institution's interns, records - in many instances in horrifying detail - the wretched condition of patients photographed as case studies. Some time later, Salvador Dali may have seen the album, using one of the images - a man with goitre - as the subject of a painting.
