Lot Essay

The present painting may be compared to a similarly composed tabletop still life by Claesz. which is monogrammed and dated 1632, sold at Christie's, London, Dec. 2, 1977, lot 17 which also features a pewter ewer, pie, grapes, plates, glass and cloth; compare also the undated tabletop still life, which N.R.A. Vroom dates circa 1638 (A Modest Message as intimated by the painters of the 'Monochrome Banketje', 1980, I, p. 35, fig. 37; II, p. 24, no. 86).

We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague, for confirming the attribution and suggesting a date of circa 1632/3 on the basis of a photograph
