The present painting forms part of a major commission for a cycle of seven pictures executed by Floris during the mid-1550's and engraved by Cornelis Cort. These paintings were mentioned as early as 1604 by Karel van Mander in his Het Schilder-boeck. All the paintings had hitherto been presumed lost
