Lot Essay
The present work may be compared with the artist's Madonna and Child in the Museo Civico Correr, Venice, (Inv. no. 231), which is signed and dated 1496 (see B. Berenson, Italian Painters of the Renaissance: The Venetian School, 1957, I, fig. 479; and P. Humfrey, Cima da Conegliano, 1985, fig. 193a). In place of the St. Catherine in the present picture is an almost identical figure of St. Mary Magdalen in the Correr painting. Humfrey notes that Pasqualino may have worked in Cima's shop as an assistant during the 1490's and that his independent work dates from as early as circa 1490.
