Although this painting was unknown to Marjorie Elizabeth Wieseman when she compiled her dissertation on Caspar Netscher (Columbia University, 1991), she accepts the picture fully on the basis of a photograph and dates it to about 1668, citing two dated portraits of that year, the Portrait of Adriaen Louise de Geer (Private Collection, Amsterdam, Wieseman, no. 73) and Portrait of an Unknown Woman (City Art Gallery, Glasgow; Wieseman, no. 75)
