4o (238 x 175 mm). Engraved frontispiece-portrait of Magellan by F. Selma, 4 large engraved folding maps by J. Pr and B. Vazquez, the second after Droel, 4 letterpress folding tables. (The maps lightly offset and with light foxing along folds, three with short marginal tears at guards.) Contemporary red morocco gilt, covers with border of solid and hatched double fillets and small neo-classical tools, royal arms of Charles III of Spain blocked at center, spine in six compartments, black morocco lettering-piece in the second, the remainder gold-tooled, gilt edges, turquoise silk liners (small wormholes at head and tail of spine, extremities a bit scuffed). Provenance: D. Feliciano Ramirez de Arellano, Marquis de la Fuensanta del Valle (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION. The morocco binding may have been commissioned by the author or publishers for presentation: the Robert C. Power copy, sold at Christie's East April 9, 1997 (lot 74), was bound similarly in red morocco, with the same armorial block but a different ornamental border. Sabin 16765.
