HOLMES AND WATSON AT BAKER STREET: PAGET'S ILLUSTRATION FOR "THE ADVENTURE OF THE NORWOOD BUILDER"

Paget, an accomplished and versatile illustrator, was chosen to illustrate Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories in their serial appearances. His depictions, which emphasize the most dramatic moments of the narrative, have become indelibly associated with the Sherlock Holmes canon. The "Norwood Builder," an illustration of significantly larger format that the typical Paget illustration, was published with the story in its first appearance in The Strand, November, 1903. It depicts the great detective, seated at his breakfast table in the Baker Street home, an open copy of the Telegram in his hands and a cigarette dangling from his lips. Dr. Watson has just risen from his chair in surprise as the agitated Norwood builder, hat in hand, throws open the door and rushes into the room.

Provenance: The present owner, purchased from the House of El Dieff, New York, 1974.
Sale room notice
The individual shown bursting through the door is not the Norwood builder himself but the character John Hector McFarlane
